DETROIT — Detroit election officials delivered their first public update of Election Day from the Northwest Activities Center early Tuesday morning, confirming that voting is underway across the city as reported by WDIV ClickOnDetroit.

Detroit City Clerk Janice M. Winfrey and her staff held a 7:30 a.m. briefing to outline expectations for voter participation and detail the ongoing tallying process. According to Winfrey, all 402 of the city's voting precincts opened without incident at 7 a.m.

Heading into the morning, local turnout figures already showed significant early participation. Winfrey stated that 25,515 Detroit residents cast their ballots during the city's early voting window. In addition, election staff have already tabulated roughly 68,000 absentee ballots. In total, election administrators anticipate processing up to 80,000 mail-in ballots over the course of the day.

To manage the remainder of the mail-in workload, tabulations are scheduled to restart at noon Tuesday at Huntington Place. Winfrey said election officials expect to collect anywhere between 8,000 and 12,000 additional absentee ballots before the day ends. The clerk's office has established a target to finish reporting those specific absentee figures by 4 a.m. Wednesday.

For residents intending to vote in person on Tuesday, officials project that between 100,000 and 130,000 total voters will cast their ballots at their assigned neighborhood polling locations. Polls are scheduled to close statewide at 8 p.m. Winfrey emphasized a crucial rule for voters who arrive late in the evening: anyone standing in line at their designated polling location before 8 p.m. retains the full legal right to cast a ballot.

Election officials also outlined a schedule for when the public can expect initial results. Winfrey stated that the city plans to begin releasing vote totals between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. By 11 p.m., the clerk's office aims to have reported approximately 90 to 95 percent of all the ballots cast throughout Detroit.

Federal and congressional oversight will be present at voting sites during the day. A group of 26 Department of Justice monitors will be deployed at various precincts across the city, working alongside congressional monitors to observe operations.

During the early morning update, Winfrey stressed the administration's commitment to maintaining smooth operations at every precinct. She told WDIV ClickOnDetroit that the city's priority is maintaining an orderly voting environment without obstacles while ensuring every valid ballot gets counted correctly. She also urged all eligible residents to head to their designated precincts and take part in the election process.

City election leaders plan to provide regular updates to the public as voting progresses throughout the day. Winfrey is scheduled to hold another media briefing from the field at 11:30 a.m. to share updated turnout figures and report on the status of polling locations.
