The Purple Rose Theatre has opened its new season with the debut of “Bastard,” a play penned by Devin Scillian. Scillian, who is well-known to Detroiters from his career as a WDIV television journalist, musician, and author, makes his first foray into playwrighting with this production. The play centers on the intertwined lives of two brothers, each possessing clashing personalities: one is a formerly successful country musician, and the other a straightlaced financial professional. Their mother's death brings them back together, forcing them to navigate the complexities of family relationships, including old and new wounds, and exploring the fundamental idea that “everyone is entitled to know their own story.”

One Detroit’s Chris Jordan attended a rehearsal for “Bastard” at The Purple Rose Theatre in mid-September. Jordan engaged in conversations with Devin Scillian about the play, Scillian’s background in theater, and how his diverse professional experiences—from journalism to music and children’s books—consistently revolve around the central theme of storytelling. Scillian emphasized the interconnectedness of these varied pursuits, all contributing to his current work as a playwright.

Jordan also spoke with Rhiannon Ragland, the play’s director, and actor Mark Colson. Their discussions shed light on The Purple Rose Theatre’s distinctive method for nurturing and developing original plays. This collaborative process is fundamental to the theater’s mission, allowing new works to evolve from concept to full production through shared effort and creative input.

Scillian’s transition into playwrighting marks a significant evolution in his career, which has consistently been defined by various forms of narrative creation. His extensive work as a journalist provided a foundation in understanding and conveying diverse stories, while his endeavors in music and children's literature further refined his ability to craft compelling narratives for different audiences. This new theatrical work at The Purple Rose Theatre exemplifies the enduring thread of storytelling that unites all his creative output.

The unique development process employed by The Purple Rose, as outlined by Ragland and Colson, is crucial for bringing original productions like “Bastard” to the stage. This collaborative environment supports playwrights in refining their artistic visions and assists actors in shaping their roles, ensuring that new narratives receive comprehensive and thoughtful development from their initial concept through the rehearsal phase. Such a method cultivates a space where new voices and stories can emerge and mature, thereby enriching the local theatrical landscape.

The premiere of “Bastard” not only signifies the beginning of The Purple Rose Theatre’s new season but also introduces Detroit audiences to a familiar public figure in a fresh and exciting creative capacity, broadening the cultural offerings available within the community.
