A significant fire broke out early Thursday morning at the Russell Woods Apartments on Detroit’s west side, resulting in the hospitalization of two residents and one firefighter. The blaze, which began around 5 a.m. at the complex located on Webb Street near LaSalle and across from Central High School, has displaced five families.

Two individuals suffered from smoke inhalation and burns and were taken to the hospital. A firefighter, who was evaluated for an ankle injury, was also hospitalized and later released.

By 5:30 a.m., large flames were visible through the roof of at least one of the 76-year-old brick buildings within the complex, which appeared to be fully engulfed. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and were instrumental in alerting residents and rescuing individuals. Deborah Young, a resident, recounted being awakened by firefighters who were beating on windows and instructing everyone to evacuate, which allowed residents to exit rapidly. Young, who was among dozens of residents alerted by the sound of firefighters, indicated they came out around 4:35 a.m. and remained outside until almost 7 a.m.

The fire rapidly consumed the second level of the building, forcing people inside to scramble to safety. Firefighters successfully rescued a couple who had been trapped on the second floor.

As daylight arrived, the extent of the damage became clear. Parts of the roof lay scattered across the courtyard, and yellow police tape surrounded the affected building, marking the scope of the destruction.

Prince Edwards, another resident of the complex, returned to find his apartment a total loss. He had moved into the building in June and was out of town when the fire occurred. Upon his return, he received a call about the fire and expressed relief that his family was not present during the incident. Edwards acknowledged the daunting task ahead, saying, "I’m starting over," and noting the impending winter and the reality of being without a home. He is currently seeking assistance from the Red Cross.

Grant & Main, the property manager for Russell Woods Apartments, declined to comment on the fire but is reportedly making arrangements for the five displaced families. The incident leaves affected residents, including Edwards, contemplating their next steps after losing their belongings to smoke and water damage.

This event marks a difficult start for residents on the west side, highlighting the sudden and severe impact of such emergencies on the community. The swift actions of firefighters ensured that more residents were safely evacuated, minimizing further injuries despite the extensive property damage. The coming weeks will see these families navigating the path to recovery, with community support and organizational assistance likely playing a crucial role.
