As October begins, Detroiters, along with residents in Hamtramck and Ferndale, have numerous opportunities to participate in community gatherings, fall festivals, and Halloween-themed events. The month’s calendar includes a range of activities, from a Detroit Public Schools Community District candidate forum to mountain biking, live music, and diverse celebrations for all ages.
Kicking off the month, Rosedale Park residents can attend a Detroit Public Schools Community District candidate forum on Friday, Oct. 2. Held at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Church, this free event offers a chance to hear from more than 30 candidates on the ballot, learn about their positions, and prepare for upcoming decisions at the polls.
Saturday, Oct. 3, features several community engagements. Rooted in Community Development Corporation will host Music in the Garden, a free event with jazz and house music, children’s activities, snacks, and fresh vegetables, inviting neighbors to bring a bag chair. Also on Saturday, the Rouge Park Mountain Bike Ramble offers a beginner-friendly chance to explore trails, with bikes and helmets available free of charge. On the same day, Keep Growing Detroit Farm hosts a free Fall Native Plant Market, where Friends of the Rouge and local vendors will sell trees, shrubs, plugs, and garden kits. For those looking to embrace the spooky season early, the MMMMonster Parade invites participants to wear monster gear and parade from Ride It Skatepark to Hamtramck Disneyland; this event is free, though donations are encouraged.
On Monday, Oct. 5, Detroit Heals Detroit presents A Seat for Tomorrow Supper Club. This intimate event brings together individuals aged 16 and older for a four-course dinner, guided conversation, and intentional healing, offered on a sliding scale from $5 to $50.
Saturday, Oct. 10, marks the opening celebration for “WOMXNHOUSE Detroit,” an exhibition exploring what it means to be a woman in America today. Featuring immersive installations and contemporary work by women and nonbinary artists, the free exhibition will be displayed across two Detroit spaces, Akoma and Irwin House, through Oct. 31. Also on Oct. 10, The Senate Theater will commemorate its 100th anniversary with a Party of the Century. This event promises an anachronistic evening with live music, including organ playing, dancing, a silent short film, and other performances, with tickets ranging from $25 to $150.
Later in the month, Detroit Documenters will host a free Fall Fabulous Community of Practice at Spread Art on Oct. 16, offering a setting for socializing amid pumpkins, cider, and harvest themes. As Halloween approaches, adult-focused events are also scheduled. Costumes & Cocktails, a grown-up Halloween party on Friday, Oct. 23, will feature drinks, food, music, and treats, including a potion lab for making spooky cocktails and a best costume contest. This 21+ event has a cost of $10 to $40. For an early-evening option, the “DONE BY 10PM” Halloween clubbing experience will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Orchid Theatre in Ferndale. Running from 6-10 p.m., this free event offers DJs, dancing, and costumes for those who prefer to celebrate early.

Leading up to Halloween, Arboretum Detroit will host a free Circle Forest Jam around a campfire on Oct. 30, encouraging participants to bring instruments, their voices, or simply themselves for an evening of music without prior experience. The Halloween festivities culminate on Oct. 31 with Scare in O’Hair at O’Hair Park, a free event for kids featuring treats, refreshments, and a “Haunted Trail” through Pitcher Woods; costumes are encouraged, and registration is required, with volunteers also needed.
